The Benagil sea cave is one of the most famous oceanic caves in the world and one of the most important tourist cards in the Algarve. The cave is one of the most impressive natural landmarks, next to the surf, in Portugal containing a small beach of golden sand and blue waters.
The entrance to the cave is impressive due to its size and the almost perfect hole that is found in the ceiling, where the sun when entering makes the environment even more stunning. It has two entrances, one located about 100 meters from the end of the small beach of Benagil and the other about 50 meters from the first. If you visit it in the morning or catch the hour when the sun is at its peak, entering directly through the hole, you can make an excellent photo report of your tour.
At Benagil beach, near the parking lot and the opening of the cave pass the walking route of the Seven vales suspended. Here, at relative distance, to keep you safe, you can see the view that is obtained from the top of the cave.
There are several ways to visit and enter the Benagil Cave and we chose to take a boat trip that allows you to see not only Benagil cave, but all the others sea caves that are in the area and also the entire coast in this area of the Algarve.
You also can choose not to go on a boat trip as the cave is located next to Benagil beach, a small and traditional fishing village. At the beach you can rent a kayak, a Stand Up Paddle board (SUP) or swimming to the cave entrance. This last form continues to be used by many people but you need to take care due to the numerous boats that visit the cave and also to the sea state and the sea currents.

Location Map from Benagil Beach
In this post we will describe what it is like to reach Benagil Cave through an organized tour from the city of Portimão.
Benagil Caves Trip
There are several enterprises that organize tours to visit Benagil Caves with several starting points. You can choose to start your trip Vilamoura or a shorter one from Portimão, for example. In addition to the tour time, you can also opt for larger boats, catamarans, semi-rigids or others. Obviously, larger boats cannot enter on the same number of caves as smaller boats. The price is varied and the nearest destinations are more accessible.
Our tour left Portimão in the morning in a very comfortable semi-rigid, accompanied by the skipper and the guide who explained the history of the names given to the caves and some other rock formations that were shown us along the route.
Leaving Portimão the first stop was at Ferragudo village, which is on the other side of the river. Later, we made some stops to observe Grande Beach or Pintadinho Beach.
After passing the Ponta do Altar Lighthouse, we entered the sea and went along the coast, glimpsing the various geological formations, the deserted beaches and the various caves that formed. Without the certainty that the order was correct, we visited the Smuggling Cave, the Doors of the Paradise Cave and the Leixão do Dragão cave among many others. Some are more beautiful than others, some smaller, others deeper but all are interesting from a geological and landscape point of view.
We also passed by Carvoeiro Beach and the geological formation of Algar Seco. Those who do not know have to get there and must not forget to peek out the window "The doll". This opening is really a window to the ocean.
After Carvoeiro we observed the various hikers near the cliffs along the Pedestrian Trail of the Seven Valleys Suspended. Carvalho Beach, even before Benagil Beach, is also quite interesting due to the fact that the access comes from inside the rocks.
And finally arriving at Benagil Beach we entered Benagil Cave. With a camera in hand, we try to absorb all its natural beauty. The time we spend on the boat always ends up being short and the fact that it is not allowed to leave the boat inside the cave is a less positive aspect. If you want to go back there, just go to Benagil Beach and rent a kayak or SUP board.
Our tour also went to Marinha Beach, where those who wanted to take a dip in the sea, had the authorization to do so.
Other ways to visit Algar do Benagil
we have already mentioned, but we leave here in terms of listing the various existing ways to visit Benagil Cave, in addition to the boat. First you should go to Benagil Beach and there you can:
Rent a kayak: It is a safer and more comfortable way and will allow you to land on the beach inside the cave.
Stand Up Paddle board: Recommended for those who already practice it and have the balance to move in the middle of the waves caused by the many boats that visit the Cave.
Swimming: Along the rock there are many people who do it. There are reports that it is forbidden, but when I took the tour I saw many people doing it protected by a watercraft lifeguard.
Note that in high season the rental of this equipment at Benagil beach is very popular. You can rent at the nearest beaches and with guides take a short tour to the cave.
